  5. Acorn Strengthens Links with IT Centres
  6.  
  7. Acorn Computers is launching an initiative aimed at
  8. strengthening its working partnerships with Educational IT
  9. Support Centres throughout the UK and thereby enhancing the
  10. support available to schools in their use of Information
  11. Technology. 
  12.  
  13. Acorn in Education Centres all around the country are
  14. providing a collaborative network to offer the best level of
  15. IT support to schools.  The Centres will act in close
  16. collaboration with Acorn's network of Education dealers,
  17. with Acorn, the Centres and Education dealers mutually
  18. assisting one another. The role of the Centres is to provide
  19. the educational aspects of IT support while dealers will
  20. continue to offer sales, installation and technical support
  21. to schools.

  23. As education and technology develop, Acorn will continue to
  24. need to channel information to schools. Schools on the other
  25. hand will continue to need support to help them to use their
  26. computers to good educational ends.

  28. The Acorn in Education Centres, which now exist within many
  29. of the best Educational IT Support Centres in the country,
  30. will assure schools of a significant base level of support
  31. while helping them to access the wide range of advanced
  32. services offered independently by the Centres.

  34. Each Centre can be visited by teachers, where they will find
  35. a representative sample of Acorn's computers - including
  36. desktop machines, portables, network solutions, multimedia
  37. equipment and peripherals.  A reference library of core
  38. curriculum software will also be available so that teachers
  39. will be able to inspect the various offerings and get advice
  40. on how best to implement their use in the classroom
  41. environment. The Centres will also offer access to local
  42. educational training centres equipped with Acorn's range of
  43. computers and help schools to fund appropriate curriculum
  44. materials.

  46. As Acorn launches new equipment, demonstration systems will
  47. be made available to the Acorn in Education Centres so that
  48. teachers can always be apprised of the latest offerings
  49. available with information as to how they are best used in
  50. the classroom.

  52. Strong links are developing between these Centres and other
  53. groups in the Acorn community such as software houses and
  54. publishers.  Centres will also be able to register to carry
  55. out Acorn training courses and will be able to join with
  56. Acorn in mounting training conferences for teachers, and in
  57. exhibiting their services to teachers at national events
  58. such as the BETT and Education shows.

  60. Acorn's Managing Director Sam Wauchope said that the Acorn
  61. in Education Centre initiative showed Acorn was fully
  62. committed to serving the needs of Education in the UK.  "I
  63. believe strongly that computer technology has an important
  64. role in enabling teaching and learning" he said.

  66. "However, we are aware that merely providing the computer
  67. hardware is not sufficient.  It is for this reason that we
  68. have defined, as part of our mission, that we will work in
  69. partnership with others whose expertise is vital in creating
  70. the complete environment for effective use of IT in schools.

  72. "The AEC initiative is intended to strengthen and formalise
  73. our links with Educational IT Support Centres and we intend
  74. that the basis of the initiative will be a permanent part of
  75. our business. "
